KFA Presentation to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services

On September 30, 2015, representatives from the Kwantlen Faculty Association and the University of the Fraser Valley Faculty and Staff Association advocated for improvements to the provincial funding of post-secondary education for the 2016 provincial budget in a presentation to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services. Gillian Dearle, Vice President Negations for the KFA, and Sean Parkinson, President of the UFVFSA, jointly presented, and Bob Davis, President of the KFA, answered the committee’s questions. We concluded the ten-minute presentation with four recommendations:

  1. The reinstatement of tuition-free Adult Basic Education programs at all our post-secondary institutions.

  2. A direct and on-going commitment of at least $22 million to support provincially-funded ESL programs delivered by BC's post-secondary institutions.

  3. Improved funding support for students, both in terms of a revitalized student grant program and for student services, to ensure students can complete programs and degrees in a timely way and without the burden of a heavy debt load.

  4. A funding formula that better responds to the cost pressures faced by BC's post-secondary institutions. Specifically, we once again recommend a comprehensive review of funding to address regional inequities and core funding needs for the entire system.
